About . . . The Dark Sky Institute

THE Dark Sky Institute (DSI) is my personal and passionate venture to
rescue the magnificent Milky Way from light pollution--or as I call it--
wasteful light. There are several ways this can be accomplished.

BUT WE CANNOT TURN OFF LIGHTS!

I have a better idea.

AS a lifelong urban stargazer I’ve bellyached about wasteful light every
clear night. One night, whilst peering through my telescope, I had an
epiphany! I decided to stop grumbling about the light-littered sky and do
something about it!

UPON retiring from teaching astronomy in 1999, I formed the Dark Sky
Institute, my nonprofit educational effort to reclaim the night sky from
wasteful light.

WHEN I started teaching astronomy in 1971, my ninth grade students could
see the Milky Way over Ames, Iowa. But by 1995 the majestic Milky Way
had vanished in the glare and glow of streetlights and business lights.

NOW the Milky Way is visible again overhead. My efforts to restore the
Milky Way emphasize common sense and voluntary actions, not laws.

Then trigger a DARK SKY REVOLUTION in your community!
Thank you!
