SMART LIGHTS ™
SMART LIGHTS = STARRY NIGHTS ™
This is NOT rocket science! It’s just plain old common sense.
Almost ALL light fixtures must aim light down, not up and out into the night sky, the way most lights currently being used in our communities do.
SMART LIGHTS:
⋅ shine directly and only on the targets of safety and security, such as doors, windows, driveways, entryways, exits, etc
⋅ use the least amount of wattage needed to keep people and property safe and secure at night.
And one more thing: Changing to smart lights is not impossible. There are already lots of smart lights in your community. Not only will smart lights reclaim starry nights, but we will all be safer and more secure as a result and we’ll all save money!
This is a win-win situation and it’s not necessary to make a controversy or confrontation out of it.
LIGHTSCAPES ™
SMART LIGHTS = STARRY NIGHTS ™
Lightscapes are the essence of the Dark Sky Institute.
Every community in America has a lightscape. Alas, most are NOT very star-friendly, like the gawdy neon lightscape that IS Las Vegas.
You can convert wasteful lightscapes in your community into star-friendly smart light lightscapes and reclaim the magnificent Milky Way aloft.
Lightscapes are hard to define. There are no typical designs or schemes. Unlike lighting laws, which lead to uniform, standardized, bland nighttime lighting, lightscapes allow for individual / community freedom of design.
Your community’s future lightscape will...
1. Create a work of nighttime light art that decorates and promotes your community’s unique character and identity--it’s one-of-a-kind personality.
2. Provide safety and security to all residents and property, while protecting and preserving the night sky overhead from wasteful, excessive light.
